On Thursday, March 2, SRLA celebrated the birthday of a pioneer in children’s literature, Theodor Geisel, Dr. Seuss, by having our Middle School students read to the elementary grades. Dr. Seuss first worked as a cartoonist, but became interested in writing children's books when he discovered that the overall reading scores for children were low and the motivation to read had taken a sudden dive.
He wanted to help the children in this area so he appealed to them in books by including rhyming, made-up, and repetitive words. This worked like a charm! Today, he is credited as teaching millions of children to learn to read. Through reading we learn to increase our vocabulary, imagination, and so much more. Happy Read Across America Day! ????????????
